Happy Easter (it’s on April 24th this year)! Here’s a quick post with some Easter recipe ideas and a list of natural dyes for anyone who’s planning on dying some eggs.

I have to confess that my celebration of Easter has been limited to egg hunts, which I love. One year, when we were traveling during Easter, we joined in on an egg hunt at the hotel we were staying at. My favorite memory is when one of my boys had way too many eggs and decided to share his treasure with a much younger child, who had not found many.
If you’re dying eggs, here’s a neat trick using mostly spices as a natural dye. Most of this list of the colors were suggested in my April PCC market newsletter. The beet suggestion is mine, since beets color everything they touch a bright shade of pink.
Naturally Dyed Eggs
Ingredients
- Yellow/gold = boil 3 tablespoons of cumin or tumeric
- Yellow = steep 2-3 tablespoons of green or chamomile tea bags in hot water
- Orange = Boil paprika
- Red = boil red onion skins
- Pink = boil beets
- Lavender = steep hibiscus tea bags in hot water
- Blue = Boil 4 cups of chopped red cabbage
- Green = straight up chlorophyll will dye anything green
- Rusty brown = boil chili powder
- Brown = boil old coffee grounds or use old coffee
- Light brown = boil dill seeds
Method
- First create the hard-boiled eggs by boiling them for about 15 minutes and then cool them in cold water.
- Add boiling water to the spice or other item. The longer you let the spice sit in the water, the darker the water will become.
- Strain the spice from the colored water and add about 1 tablespoon of vinegar to it.
- Cool the dye, dip each egg in the dye, and then place the egg on a paper towel to dry.
I love the idea of using only all-natural dyes for your Easter eggs. I never knew that you could make so many colors from assorted kitchen items! Have any interest in sharing this in my Earth Day blog hop? – http://www.favedietsblog.com/the-healthy-hop-april-edition/
