Here’s my favorite recipe for soft tacos or tortillas, using just coconut flour. It’s also in 2 of my cookbooks, The Healthy Coconut Flour Cookbook, and Cooking for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.
This tortilla recipe can be used in so many ways. You’ll find the complete fish taco recipe in the book Cooking for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which includes the marinated fish, avocado crema, pico de gallo, creamy coleslaw (not shown), and of course the tortillas. Also check out my recipe for Roasted Fajitas using these tortillas.
Here’s a quick update on these tortillas: I’ve been using a non-stick pan to make these and I’m loving them so far. It is much easier to fry the tortillas in a non-stick pan, flip them, and then just slide them off the pan and onto the plate. I also added a few photos so you can see the results. For reference, I added about 3 tablespoons to the pan for each tortilla. Enjoy!
Tortillas {coconut flour}
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup egg whites about 4 large egg whites, or 8 tablespoons
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1/4 cup dairy-free milk
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
- 2 tablespoons coconut flour
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together the egg whites, 2 tablespoons oil, milk, and lime juice.
- Add the coconut flour, cumin, and salt; whisk until well blended. Let the batter sit for a few minutes so the coconut flour can absorb the moisture.
- Heat the skillet over medium heat and add about 1 tablespoon of butter or oil.
- Once the skillet is warm, pour in about 2 tablespoons of batter to make a 4 to 5-inch tortilla.
- After a few minutes, when the edges and bottom are starting to brown and you can easily slip a spatula underneath, flip the tortilla to the other side.
- Transfer the tortilla to a plate and repeat with the rest of the batter. Place waxed apper or parchment paper between the tortillas. Serve, or cover and store in the refrigerator for up to a week or so.
Is there a way to do this without any milk? Even though I’ve been on the scd diet since November 2021, I’m still not at a point where I can bring milk in.
Hi Charla, yes, you can substitute yogurt or water. You’ll lose a bit a flavor with the water and the batter will be a bit thinner so you can add a pinch more coconut flour to thicken it.
Hi, quite new to the whole SCD cooking …..this recipy looks and sounds amazing but what do you mean bybdairt free milk?
Dairy-free milk can be almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, and homemade is best to insure there are no additives but there are some SCD-legal brands.
Not sure if it needs more flour or wht but it is much more egg white consistency than tortilla. Curious if baking would have been easier too.
If you read my recipe notes, I talk about baking them. The flavor is just a bit different (no oil) but much easier. This is not going to taste exactly like an all-purpose flour tortilla. You can add more coconut flour for sure.
Thank you so much for the recipe. I made a modified version with a gelatin egg substitute. Being able to give my daughter an alternative tortilla for tacos nearly brought me to tears tonight. Thank you!!!
So good to hear! Best wishes
Hi!
I really love this recipe! This is amazing!
I’m going to make it today!
Thanks so much!!
Tries theses today and they all died on me…I used cashew milk instead…and they ended up being coconut scramble eggs lol…so sad and disappointed.. No flipping or anything
yes, these can be tricky and they’re delicate. I find letting them fry for a long time on one side, or adding a bit more coconut flour makes them stay together.
Do these freeze well?
Yes, they do! Place parchment paper or paper towel between them for easier separation.
Tried these tonight and the first one didn’t turn out – I think one tbsp butter is too much in the pan so I reduced it and the rest turned out amazing!!!! Thanks once again:)
Thanks! I’ll have to try it 🙂
I have tried your tortillas when an SCD friend of mine gave some to me to try. They were delicious! I couldn’t believe that I could actually make tortillas again for my breakfast wraps. I was so excited!
I have a question though: I have been strict SCD for 20 weeks today (YAY!), and have tried to introduce almond or coconut flour into my diet every now and again for the last 6-8 weeks, including in this recipe and others you have on your site. Every time I eat either flour I find that I have problems with constipation. Why would this happen? I am careful about what I eat, drink plenty of water, and always try to incorporate as much SCD-legal fibre in my diet as possible. I was wondering your thoughts. Thanks in advance!
Would these hold up in the freezer – would love to do a big batch and have on hand.
Yes, just seal them tightly and thaw them before reheating in a skillet or oven.
I take pleasure in, lead to I found exactly what I was taking a look for. You’ve ended my 4 day long hunt! God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye
ok, so is that correct 2T coconut flour or 2Cups? hubby’s gut killing him and we are cutting out all grains. haven’t eaten meat (except for salmon) for 35yrs. he is hungry and losing weight. trying to find something. he did add chicken other day.
yes, 2 tablespoons. Coconut flour goes a long way and absorbs quite a bit of moisture in a recipe.
I too preordered your cook book and I LOVE the recipes in it. the Blueberry “Coffee” slice is just so delicious, not to mention the simple Sandwich Bread… finally something to have with melts! The only negative comments I would make (and believe me I hate making negative comments) is that are no weight measures on the ingredients which makes it hard for getting the recipe right with the cup measures differences between countries and that there is not an alphabetical index of the different recipes. Otherwise I go to your book first to “look” for something new to make and generally find something and end up going no further! Thanks for making a brilliant book.
Thanks for the great review Rosanne! Yes, sorry about that. My next book includes ingredients in weights especially since the format/publisher of my next book has International requirements.
I tried making it but I could not flip it over as it started breaking when i tried to. Is this recipe too delicate to make large tortillas? My batter was still runny after leaving it to rest for 10-15mins, is that suppose to be the consistency or should it be like a thick pancake mixture?
Yes, it is a bit on the delicate side, but should be too difficult. Try adding a bit more coconut flour and possibly spreading it less thin. Yes, it will be runny.
Hi,
Does anyone know of (or has already tried) an egg substitute that would work well in this recipe?
Thank you so much for any suggestions you can offer 🙂
I cannot believe these are tortillas I can eat! They look like regular tortillas! I am near tears! Definitely making these this weekend and testing them out with some tacos! So excited!
Yummy, Im inspired to make tonight….
Id add guacamole, salsa, shredded cheese, lettuce and fish (spiced)
Do you know how long these will stay good? I’m trying to plan travel foods for a 3-4 day trip.
They’ve stayed good for me for a week, but seal them well and keep cold.
My husband and I are just beginning the journey to wheat-freeness and I think your website will be a great help. I would love to win the cookbook.
Have liked the facebook page, pinned the fish tacos, and am leaving a comment. Honestly, I have just stumbled on here after watching Vegugated and Food Matters. Starting to make changes to my lifestyle and let go of all those old comfort foods.
Thanks! Keep a look out for the next giveaway.
Always looking for new recipes and all of yours have been great. Would love to have the cookbook too.
Thanks for the giveaway.
I would love to win…I just tried cinnamon bun muffins today and they were absolutely delish!! I would love to try even more recipes with your book!! Thank you for a chance to win!!!
Excited to try these for our gluten free family!! We love, love Mexican food and will be glad for another option besides corn tortillas !!
Love your site as it has been a real life-saver for me. Looking forward to the new book and making the tortilla recipe. Do the tortillas freeze well? I like to fill mine with grilled mild white fish, shredded lettuce, and carrot, thinly sliced avocado and a squeeze of fresh lime.
hmm. I don’t know – I haven’t frozen them, so not sure. I have stored them in the refrigerator for up to a week, covered/sealed.
I am going to make tacos with these tonight;) thank you
I am looking forward to your book, maybe i will get lucky and win a copy but I am getting a copy one way or another;)
Our family loves taco nights, but that means a plate of meat & toppings for me. I’m so excited to try these that I’ve added a taco night to coming this week’s menu. Thank you!
Hello! I love your vanilla cupcake recipe – it’s what brought me back here today actually. Then I realized that you wrote the Specific Carb Diet book that I’m currently reviewing for my blog – I love the book by the way! Your site is just as amazing!
Great recipe! I’m also loving the suggestion about making chocolate tortillas with yummy fillings…you need to get on that ASAP! 🙂
You have an amazing blog with wonderful recipes! So happy to have found it(you)!!!!
I usually use leafy green as wraps but I think I’ll have to give this recipe a try! I usually stuff my (leafy) tortillas with either a taco seasoned beef and guacamole or an asian chicken mixture with sesame oil coated broccoli and mushrooms. Delish!
Always looking for new ideas to aid in gluten free, dairy free recipes. And who doesn’t LURVE tacos?!
That’s awesome! I can’t wait to try these tortillas! I need to get away from grains but have found it difficult to do so. I like my breads. 🙁 These look so yummy though (and I actually have everything I need to make them already, too). 🙂 Thanks for sharing! Oh, my favorite filling is probably chicken. 🙂
Thanks so much for this recipe! I have been dying for tortillas and as a lover of Mexican food, it’s been hard letting it go. Can’t wait to try it and make me some carnittas!
As always, your recipe looks great. Thanks for your blog and all of the delicious healthy food you’ve helped me make. I would love to win the book.
Wow! So many great comments and wonderful taco filling ideas. What a wonderful blog! I went gluten free a couple years ago and have been dabbling in “Paleo”, but now I’m being treated for SIBO, so I’m starting the SCD! Recipes like yours make it seem like it’s going to be a breeze. 🙂 I live in Portland, OR, and one of our favorite restaurants here, Cruzroom, serves fancy tacos! My 3 favorites I would love to try to adapt to SCD. 1) Fried pickles, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, onions, slaw, and a special sauce. 2) Seared pork belly, apple-vinaigrette slaw, topped with Cotija cheese. 3) Carlton Farms pork braised in a spicy red curry sauce, topped with a cilantro-lime slaw and chicharrones…Yum!
Wow! just yum! Wish I could give everyone a book!
I have yet to try fish tacos… I want to, but the idea of working with fish intimidates me. But those tortillas look absolutely scrumptious!!!!!!
Fish is actually quite easy and cooks up fast. Just place the fish in lime juice for a few hours (in the fridge) if you want to marinade it. Then cook it in a pan for a few minutes on each.
Thanks for the recipe for tortillas. I have been wondering how I could make a substitute.
I’m back. I made these last night. You are really talented! They were a huge hit! The things I liked best are that:
1) they still fold over – the other recipes end up more like big flat chips.
2) they are flip-able (is that a word?. SCD stuff just never seems to stick together well. They were still really fragile, but I guess that’s to be expected if there are no fake ingredients gluing the things together.
3) they weren’t too eggy.
Thanks for a great recipe and please keep up the good work!
Thanks Ginger! Guess what? I re-baked some last night and they get tougher the longer you cook them, and less fragile. So try cooking them just a bit longer, a bit more brown than my photos. They don’t really burn as much as darken.
I’ve never made tortillas, but my daughter eats them all the time for lunch. She melts cheese in the tortilla and then dips it in sour cream.
Fantastic recipe! Tried these and they are absolutely delicious!
Would love to own a copy of the book 🙂
I love fish tacos! Although my kids prefer beans and cheese. I’d love to win your cookbook!
I’d love to add this cookbook to my collection!

Tortillas look delicious! I’ve always wanted to make my own homemade ones!
i love your site and i want your book so badly! i like to fill my tortillas with avocado, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, black beans, cilantro, and sometimes a little roasted chicken : )
I have a new love for fish tacos and these tortillas look great. I need the cookbook for the recipe!
I would love to win a copy of your cookbook! You have great recipes, and I have a need to cook for my son who is on the GAPS diet. I’d love to make him these tortillas! I’d fill it with fresh veggies (cucumbers, spinach, peppers) and maybe some kimchi!
your web site is my go to for everything SCD/PALEO… I love that you keep it simple, and honestly, have so many faves. Your cookbook would be loved in my house.
I am so excited to find your blog and your many GAPS friendly recipes. We are just starting out on this diet after doing anti-candida diets for several years! Thank you for taking the time to share with us.
Love Comfy Belly! Love spicy meat and grilled onions in tortillas topped with guacamole, fermented salsa, and homemade sourcream!
My family is thrilled to have a good tortilla recipe that I can eat too! And that creamy coleslaw looks delicious! Fish tacos here I come 🙂
We like to fill our tortillas with huevos rancheros (eggs with pico de gallo) and cheese for those of us in the family who can have it.
Can’t wait to try your fish tacos!!
This book sounds great! Loved your other one. I loved tortillas with grilled veggies – mushrooms, onions and red peppers – and cheese. Also like them with rotisserie chicken and mixed toppings. Easy fix for day 2 of the chicken!
I would love to fill it with tangy fish tacos
This looks amazing!! I love making fish tacos or peanut butter/banana rollups with tortillas! You can do anything with them!
These look delicious. I’m about a month and a half into the specific carb diet, and I’m loving it. I’ve got 2 weeks left till I’m completely medication free. (I’ve been on an immunosuppressant for a year and a half for my crohns disease). I would love to win the cookbook, I feel like I’m on the Internet 24/7 searching for recipes. Your blog is beautiful. Thanx for all the work you put into it. It’s encouraging to see all the great food that I’m able to eat!
I think I will be trying out this tortilla recipe today!! Thanks sounds amazing.
Oh my gosh!! So excited, I’ve been looking for a tortilla recipe that doesn’t use regular flour. So excited, Thank You!!

These look delicious, cannot wait to make them!!
I would love this! I am new to SCD and love cooking, so I am looking for all new recipes!

My favourite filling would have to be spicy chicken! Yummmmm!!!! Or even better, chocolate tortillas with fruit filling for a yummy treat! 😀
oh, now you’re talking, or a mole sauce with chicken
Will you make them for me???
ha!
I just tried these & they didn’t turn out, any ideas? I substituted lemon for the lime juice?
Hi Casie. I just made them too. It shouldn’t matter if it’s lemon or lime, although I haven’t tried lemon. what didn’t turn out exactly? they’re basically made like pancakes and you just need to let them brown enough on one side before you flip them.
I tried them again using 2/3 cup of egg whites, instead of 4 egg whites, & they turned out much better!
Thank you!
ah, good to know. Thanks! Did you use large eggs for the 4 egg whites?
thanks for the opportunity to possibly win your book!
Wow, this is awesome! Favorite tortilla filling is probably eggs and avocado!
Can’t wait for this book!
I have been trying to limit my gluten intake over the last couple months and I am excited to try these as an alternative to lettuce wraps. Call me borning but I love chicken in my tortillas 🙂
You’re stuff is fabulous – keep it coming!

Looks amazing! I eat paleo, and I have yet to perfect the ratios for taco tortillas that don’t split while cooking or eating, so next up I will be trying your recipe!
My favorite tacos are with homemade chorizo (pork sausage with chile peppers, paprika, garlic, s&p), guac, and mango, red pepper salsa. Mmmm!
hope it works well for you! great combo!
My mouth is watering!
So glad to have this recipe and cant wait to make them! Hoping to bake them into crisper tortilla chips for salsa and gauc!
Carnitas in tacos are definitely my favorite…
glad to see some low carb but still foodie-friendly books starting to come out. Looks great.
My favorite tortilla fillings- eggs. I love a good egg burrito in the morning.
This website has been a serious lifesaver to my family. I have 4 young children, two of which have severe allergy to grain. Thanks to you I have been able to keep my sanity and the complaining about meal time to a minimum lol. I am very much looking forward to the cookbooks release, I think it will be used daily over here. I love the tortillas! I can’t choose between the enchilladas and the lasagna though 🙂
Would love to try these.
Can’t wait to try this recipe and get teh book! My favorite filling is carne asada, guacomole, and cheese!
I have been scouring the internet for a decent tortilla recipe. I can’t wait to try yours. We ate them all the time before SCD for tacos, fajitas, egg burritos, quesadillas, plain with salsa, and even for peanut butter sandwiches. Thanks!

And I fillthem with some of my brown lentils I cooked in the crockpot yesterday along with the fresh ingredients I have on hand. Thanks for sharing!
First off, thank you for pioneering this web site and to all the others who have gone before us and painstakingly found how to survive digestive issues by eating differently. Being new to scd, I do not have any suggestions for the fillings of tortillas, because I haven’t figured out how to make them without starch (and still taste delicious)!
Looks awesome..madly in love with all your recipes. Thanks!!
I pinned this post, and I would have done so even without the contest!!
I can’t wait to try these! I grew up in California and I miss my mexican food. I’m so busting out the coconut flour this afternoon!

Can’t wait to get this cookbook! I’ve been following your blog for a few years. I tend to feel my best when I eat in alignment with Paleo and SCD.
I just wanted to give a shout out about this new cookbook. I preordered it, so it came in the mail a couple of weeks ago. It’s wonderful. Full color pictures, manageable recipes, and the book lies flat while you are making the recipe. Everything I love about comfybelly and more, in a book. : ) No need to put my name in the contest, since I already have a copy. Just wanted to sing the praises of the new tome.
Thanks! Just getting back to reading more comments and it was so wonderful to read this. 🙂

Thank you for posting all of your awesome alternatives for people on SCD. PS. I will fill mine with refried black beans, chz, lettuce, tomato and avocado.
Thanks Angie. It’s not the traditional texture, but the flavor and texture is works well and it doesn’t fall apart.
