Chocolate Chip Scones {coconut flour}

Jun 12, 2014 · 189 Comments

Chocolate Chip Scones - Comfy Bely

My chocolate chip scones recipe appears in both my Healthy Coconut Flour Cookbook and my Everyday Keto Baking cookbook.

These scones pair well with your morning cup of tea or coffee, but they are also a great on-the-run breakfast meal or snack. They are a bit on the lighter side, as far as scones go, thanks to the lightness of coconut flour. This recipe makes a good number of scones, so stash some away in the freezer for a later date.

To make these dairy-free, for the yogurt substitute coconut milk or other dairy-free yogurt or cream. You'll want to use very thick coconut milk, otherwise your scones may be a bit runny. Another option is to use coconut cream in place of yogurt.

To prevent them from spreading on the baking sheet while baking, place the batter in the refrigerator for 15 minutes and the place the scones on the baking sheet to bake.

I've had a few readers tell me the scones spread when baking. Not sure if it's the subs or the coconut flour brand since I haven't had trouble using different coconut flour brands. To prevent it from spreading, place the batter in the refrigerator or freezer for 15 minutes or so before baking.

These came out so nice with the perfect ratio of liquid to flour. I prefer coconut flour to almond flour for baking because of nut allergy in my family. This will be my go to scone recipe. My husband thinks they could be cookies. I'm so happy to have found this! Thanks!

I'm fairly new to baking with coconut flour. This is the third of your CF recipes I've tried. Although the texture isn't what one would expect of a wheat flour scone, my hubby and I thought they were light and delicious. I used my 2 oz. disher to portion out the dough; yielding 12 scones. Still only took 25 min. in my oven. Using a calorie calculator, each scone comes in at 183 calories. Not bad at all, for such a generous size.
Thank you, Erica, Your cookbook is going on my wishlist for sure!

Just making these scones...I replaced the baking soda with baking powder (grain free of course) and I'm getting a much nicer shape and lift in them. Coconut flour reacts better with baking powder as opposed to baking soda. Erica test them that way and see if you want to change the recipe.

I'm not trying to win anything, as these scones were the first recipe of yours that I've tried. THEY. ARE. FABULOUS!!! You have a brand new fan!! I've been experimenting with coconut flour the last 2 years and this is probably the most success I've had - I'm really picky when it comes to texture. I can't wait to get my hands on your book!!

Hi there! Stumbled upon your website not too long ago and have been browsing your recipes (which all look YUMMY by the way!). For this particular recipe, the Chocolate Chip Scones, can I use something other than chocolate chips? Like blueberries or just chopped nuts? Chocolate isn't necessarily SCD-friendly (at least for me it isn't), and I wanted to substitute it with something that I could eat, and that would taste just as good! Hopefully, blueberries would work! 🙂

I made these yesterday, but unfortunately they didn't come out right at all 🙁 They were totally flat like cookies. I let the batter sit for about 20 minutes before baking them (I had something else in the oven that I let finish first) - do you think that would have affected them? I was so excited! Scones are my favorite.

Was it warm (warm ambient air/environment) while they were sitting outside? I haven't seen this - which ingredients did you use (coconut milk or?)? And, if coconut milk, did you use full-fat?

so, i just made these scones. a couple things: 1) i think you might want to add to flatten the scones before baking, instead of just saying to shape them. mine seemed underdone in the middle.
    2) is coconut flour just sort of like that, though? it seemed just as described on the outside, at the exact same temperature oven for the exact same amount of time, and yet the middle seems sort of dough-ish. but at the same time, it's almost a little bit dry in the mouth. but maybe that's just how the coconut flour is.

    thoughts?

I make these very small, no more than 2 tablespoons of batter per scone to avoid the scones from baking too long on the outside and not enough on the inside. The longer you bake coconut flour items, the drier they get, so baking it longer won't solve your issues - it sounds like you need to make smaller scones. You can flatten them, and it might affect the center baking issue, but I suspect you are just making them a bit bigger than I do. Hope that helps.

The scones are wonderful, and thank you for giving me the tools and courage to learn how to use coconut flour. I have been cooking with nut flours for 10 years, and am so pleased to expand my possibilities for gluten free. My attempts to use coconut flour in the past have been discouraging. I have made the chocolate chip scones and added dried fruits (apple juice infused) and that is nice.

I love making baked chicken tenders with a mix of almond and coconut flour as the "breading". I love this especially because my daughter enjoys it so much. She's so picky and it's hard to get her to eat anything healthy, so this is definitely great for both of us!

I've earmarked this scone recipe, and am so excited to try it, and then to try substitutions to the chocolate chips. Oh, the possibilities!
